Hybrid Skin
Project type
Projected light sculpture - bees wax cast pigs, projected imagery, audio reactive
Date
2013
Location
Windsor, Ont.
Three hundred sixty-five hollow wax miniature pigs are arranged in concentric circles, all uniformly facing forward. These hollow forms symbolize emptiness—a void, an empty shell, or a vessel awaiting fulfillment. They become hosts to projected digital imagery, transforming their surfaces into dynamic sites of interaction. The wax membrane of each pig serves as both a literal and metaphorical boundary, functioning on multiple levels as the point of convergence between the physical and the virtual. This hybrid relationship fuses the tangible form of the wax pigs with the intangible, ephemeral nature of the projected images, creating a dialogue between materiality and digital representation.
Other considerations:
The mass replication of pigs references the emerging practice of breeding genetically modified (GM) pigs for human organ transplants, a process known as xenografting. Here, scale plays a crucial role, engaging our innate desire for the object and drawing the viewer closer. The installation, with its disc suspended at an accessible height, invites interaction—placing the pigs within reach and heightening their tangible presence.
Each pig serves as a potential symbol of hope for individuals awaiting xenotransplants, yet simultaneously confronts us with the moral and ethical dilemmas of breeding animals for such specific and utilitarian purposes. Hybrid Skin - exists in a state of oscillation: at once seductive in its promise of life-saving potential, and challenging in its provocation of deeper ethical questions.
