Facet - WAVES

Project type

Interactive projection mapped Installation

Date

2016

Location

Windsor, Ont.

“Facet” is a large scale interactive projection mapping installation using live camera feed, face
tracking software. As an additional component to the installation, there are 2 large LED
sculptures constructed to resemble salt crystal formations. I feel that this project is a reflection
of Windsor’s multifaceted culture and pays homage to a part of Windsor’s history and identity.
Over the course of the two-day festival we anticipate that many people will want to engage
with the project by having their likeness projected onto the larger then life 3D face.
This project is a celebration of Windsor culture, identity and history.
Using a live camera feed, participants faces are projected onto the canvas of a giant
polygonal 3D face. As more participants engage with the work, more faces are stored in a
database that is looped throughout the festival (morphing from one face to another). Every
once and a while geometric patterns and colour combination will play across the surface of the
face as a kind of light show.
This combination of the organic and polygon raises questions about the digital
representation of self, modern attention spans, and the narcissistic and voyeuristic qualities of
modern culture.
It is also an interesting and engaging way to digitally teleport one’s visage from here to there. I
think we are always fascinated with seeing our likeness presented on a screen, such as at a
sporting event on the Jumbo-Tron, or even on TV or YouTube. It serves as a mirror of sorts,
mediated through technology as well as a crude form of telepresence. The project may also
serve as a critique on culture that is constantly under surveillance and utilized as a means of
identification and security. All of which I think are very relevant topics for discussion in our
visual-centric culture. But mostly it is just really FUN!!
